Evening Events – Fragrance Fashion Show, Interview with Fred Naraschkéwitz

6. September 2018

Wednesday, 10 October 2018
from 18:00 – 21:00 hrs in Foyer 3

Can a fragrance change your perception of clothing?
It is a beguiling synergy when a woman combines a colorful, flowing dress with a feminine, floral fragrance. The dress is amplified in the intensity of perception. It addresses the sense of smell and vision.
In the same way, it can also lead to a rift between look and scent. This can have a negative or positive effect: Imagine you are sitting in a café and an elegantly dressed gentleman comes in. The suit fits perfectly, hair and beard are trimmed, shoes freshly polished. He passes your table emanating a smell of cold tobacco smoke, garlic and a hint of aquatic aftershave. Nobody will turn around after this man. The unobtrusive young woman in a grey sweater, leggings and sneakers who sits down next to you on the train. Here, a delicate bouquet of blossoms, fine wood and a hint of spearmint chewing gum will instantly attract sympathy. We like or dislike the smell of someone – the credibility of a person and his or her look are either manifested or destroyed by a scent.

From your point of view, are there fashion trends for fragrance as for clothing, and if so, which ones?
Yes, there are also trends in the world of fragrance, but these follow rules, which are different to fashion trends that seasonally trickle into the market as new collections.
At the dawn of major fashion houses in the early 20th century, the fragrances were intended as statements that helped in recognizing a brand. The scents were „edgy“.
Since the middle / end of the 20th century, extensive market research programs have also been run in order to develop the right scent for the customer. The task is to sell large amounts of perfume in the most risk-free way possible. Thanks to marketing campaigns, there are hypes around a number of fragrances.
We have seen a new trend since the 2000s. It is about individuality and gender fluidity. Triggered by trendsetters, It Girls and musicians, social media and its influencers, which create their own perfumes (or have them created for them). Niche fragrances for unconventionality. Perfumes to compose yourself for individuality. Scents which used to be considered „typically male“, and which contain musk and wood flavours, are now worn by women. Scents termed as „typically female“, with floral fragrance nuances can now increasingly be found in male scents.
Currently we are finding many parallel trends (co-trends) on the market, such as floral to oriental and oud to aquatic.

Fashion, scent and eroticism. Does this combination play a crucial role in human perception?
Our biology leaves us no other choice but to react to sexual stimuli. Looking at certain body shapes and areas that are hidden, revealed or accentuated by fashion, awakens primordial instincts. The same goes for scents. A smell that we absorb is conducted directly to the olfactory center of our brain. The sense of smell is the most complex chemical sense and dependent on factors we have little control over, such as the hormone status (pheromones), social background, memories and personal experiences of the individual. The human being stores fragrances with the help of personal experiences and thus expresses preferences or aversions for certain scents.
This is what makes the task of creating a fragrance so complex.

You created a male perfume especially for this event. What are its basic notes?
Amberlin is a monolithic signature fragrance that starts right at the heart note.
A modern interpretation of amber, which very clearly and neatly forms a synergy with the oakmoss. Floral aspects and a delicate spiciness due to the saffron give the fragrance its distinctive touch.

What do you expect from SEPAWA’s „Fragrance Attack“?
From year to year, the SEPAWA as a platform and meeting place of the perfume, soap and detergent manufacturer enjoys an ever-increasing popularity. In addition to exhibition stands, an exchange of information and fascinating lectures, this year for the first time, the „Fragrance Attack“ was launched. As a leading perfume house with headquarters in Germany, we present our latest fragrance creations from the field of Fine Fragrances in conjunction with a fragrance-inspired fashion collection. A little glamor on the SEPAWA conference, which is otherwise focused on technical applications, is ushering in a new era here. A breeze, or as in this case, a cloud of perfume of fresh citrus notes, exotic flowers, fine woods and beguiling musk which is in the air and breezes through the corridors and halls of the SEPAWA.
We from FREY&LAU are very pleased indeed to be able to contribute to this event

Programm – It’s all about Fragrance, Interview with Dr. Edison Diaz

26. July 2018

DGP Fragrance Fashion Show and Fragrance Lounge

It’s all about Fragrance

The German Society of Perfumers (DGP) in the SEPAWA consists of perfumers and other experts in the fragrance industry. Our aim is the promotion of scientific and innovative activities in the field of perfumery and to impart the subject of fragrance as an emotional-aesthetical element to the general public.

Smells trigger a wealth of emotions and memories in people. They evoke individually specific and memorable experiences. That is precisely what we want to achieve with the Fragrance Fashion Show and  Fragrance Lounge. We want to touch the visitors emotionally and offer a broader understanding of the world of perfumery as part of the congress. After all, fragrances signify quality of life and provide everyday life a sensory diversity. In addition, the scent is usually key in choosing a personal care or household product. In addition, the scent is usually part and parcel when it comes to choosing a care or household product.

This year, the DGP has organized a special highlight for the SEPAWA Congress. A Fashion Show with a scentscents specially created for the respective outfits will address all the senses. Selected spokespeople from the fragrance section talk about current topics in the fragrance industry, and a panel discussion invites those interested to an in-depth dialogue. We would be delighted if the SEPAWA Congress’s expanded program within the field of fragrances were to persuade further companies and experts and encourage active DGP members to strengthen a creative exchange of ideas within the think tank. Visit us in our DGP Fragrance Lounge at the SEPAWA Congress 2018!

Scientific Conference – Keynote Address, Interview with Dr. Antonia Rados

Turmoil in the Middle East – Consequences for Europe

Dr. Rados, what fascinates you about your work?
War correspondents are necessary, although they should be personally uninvolved eye-witnesses. Anybody who might be “fascinated” by war, is certainly not the right person.

You have seen many wars and its terrors at first hand. Are you an opponent of war?
Nowadays fortunately everybody is a war – opponent. Although some militaries and politicians, who oppose it, still make wars. But everybody who observes wars at close distance, will find out: One thing is to be against war. Another is to watch it: It is far more brutal what a distant war – opponent can ever imagine.

Most of your colleagues are male. Do women and men report on war
differently?
In war, men behave often like engineers, women like nurses. Men watch the weapons – whereas women see the victims.

On the occasion of this year‘s SEPAWA Congress in Berlin, you give a lecture on the topic of „Upheaval in the Middle East and its impact on Europe“.
Why is the Middle East so important for us Europeans?
First of all, the Middle East is our neighboring region. Geography alone generates a certain closeness in many aspects: Refugee-flows, import of religious ideas, apart from the resources like oil. Middle East crisis are always at Europe ́s door. But Middle East is before all, the historic corridor. It connected in ancient times Europe and Asia. This has not changed – the 21st century will, in my view, bring a return of the importance of Asian-European relations – with a new role for the Middle East.

World politics are currently characterized by dissent as perhaps never before. Where do you see the cause for their inability to compromise?
The rise of “strong” men – in Europe, in the USA and elsewhere is a new phenomenon. Authoritarian figures are celebrating their comeback everywhere. They are far more interested in their own „ego“ than in compromises. They confuse compromises with weakness. This is dangerous for the world. But with or without powerful men, the current state of the world is unpredictable. I fear, it will take many years before we have a New World Order – how it will look is the big question.

The refugee crisis is significantly linked to trouble spots like the Middle East.
Do you see any chance for a world without or at least with fewer crises?
At the moment, nobody is solving problems. What is even more worrying, not only do crisis remain, they expand. Long unresolved crises lead to flows of refugees because in the end, the population only has one freedom left, and that is the freedom to leave their country. So that’s what they do.
A typical example is the Syrian war, which since 2011 nobody tried to sort out. If it would have been done, we wouldn ́t have seen such a flood of refugees heading for Europe in 2015.

We differentiate between war refugees and economic migrants. Can corruption, mismanagement, undersupply etc. not also be seen as a kind of
war – a war against one’s own civilian population?
It isn’t a war. It’s bad, it ́s not the same. But a young Syrian, or Nigerian, doesn’t understand why his search for a better life is a crime. It is also not only a job they are looking for. It is about living in a different society. Jobs can be created sometimes over night. A new society takes time. The local power – brokers and politicians care since a long time only for their own interests. The West is also not really pushing for change. Not in Africa. Not in Middle East.

Which role does religion play in crises of this world?
The Soviet dictator Josef Stalin once made a cynical remark about the Pope: „How many divisions does the Pope have?“ As a war correspondent, I predominantly count the number of „divisions“: If you don’t have the money or the tanks, you cannot wage a war, be it religious or not….. Even the feared Islamic state, IS, owned little military equipment, despite its Islamic radicalism. That’s why it lost against the Western Alliance. Religion plays the role the politicians attribute to it.
On the other hand, the general search for identity in the 21st century is evident.
Religion is one of the possibilities of joining a group, getting an identity, especially if there is little else.

Dr. Antonia Rados

Smelling Beyond the Nose: Expression and Physiological Function of Extranasal Olfactory Receptors

For you personally, what is the most fascinating aspect in your research on smelling and tasting?

I was fascinated most by the breadth of the topic. I studied biology, chemistry and medicine, and all  these subjects are strongly connected to the effects of smell. Fragrances are chemical, functions are biological and the latest research has shown that fragrances also have an considerate medicinal significance and influence cellular reactions.

Professor Hatt, what significance does fragrance have for human life?

The olfactory cells in the nose are directly connected to the emotion and memory center in the brain and are safely stored there for a very long time. That way, fragrances are perfectly suited to transporting us back to the ancient past. For this reason, fragrances also play a central but mostly subconscious role in every decision we make daily as humans. This applies when we make purchasing decisions for products, but fragrances also help us decide whether we like or dislike another human being, even with the choice of partners. It is a huge list. In addition, there are the health aspects. Almost all human behavior can be affected by fragrance. No wonder they are increasingly used in marketing, psychology or medicine. Often we are influenced without even noticing it.

You said that loves goes through the nose. Could one presume that our entire consumer behavior goes through the nose?

Fragrances are connected and stored in our brain with the emotion that we had the moment we first became aware of the fragrance. This assessment applies to a product as well. As a matter of fact, „fragrance brands“ are used in almost all areas nowadays, practically everything is scented. Shoes, mobile phones, departments stores, hotels and many companies feature a brand perfume, the so-called „corporate scent“. Our consumer behavior is clearly determined by what we smell. This will also be the subject of my talk on the occasion oft he SEPAWA congress in October.

Do we smell through the nose?

We can only smell through the nose, however, the olfactory receptors of the nose can be found everywhere in our body as well. With the help of these „chemo rezeptors“ which are located in our organs and in the body tissue, the cellular functions are influenced. This has nothing to do with „smelling“ and works for people who have completely lost all sense of smell. A good example would be fragrance receptors in the skin cells that promote wound healing and skin regeneration. Even hair growth can be influenced by fragrances through stimulation of the fragrance receptors, be it for a better digestion or an increase or a decrease in the heart beat. Fragrances also trigger cellular reactions in the brain: calming, stimulating, concentration-enhancing etc.. All these are less to do with the subjective perceptions of smell but more the effects due to pharmacological reactions and as such, they always remain the same and are reproducible.

Is there such a thing as the smell that goes with a circumstance, a company, a place or an event?

Yes, every company wants to convey a message. This message can of course be emphasized by fragrances. If you want to emphasize modernity and freshness, you would probably use something citrus-based, whereas if you are going for a down-to-earth approach, you would more likely fall back on familiar notes such as earthy or lavender. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the University of Bochum, we created our own university fragrance which we named „knowledge“. It contains our research knowledge of the last 20 years. We have been able to show scientifically that certain fragrances cause our brain to make us more active, more able to concentrate, whereas others would have a calming and sleep-promoting effect.  In my view, this is the future: effective perfumes.

Could you create a Fragrance of SEPAWA?

Yes, sure. To do this, I would have to identify SEPAWA’s message and translate that into a fragrance. Perhaps in October we could sit down together and think what SEPAWA smells like
